The Irani Trophy was instituted by the BCCI to honour Z R Irani in appreciation of his services to Indian cricket.
Mr Irani was connected with the board in various roles from 1928 to 1970.
The idea was to pit the Ranji Trophy champions against a combined eleven from rest of India. It started in 1959-60 and was played at the end of the season.
After five years it was shifted to the beginning of next season. In 1960-61, 1961-62, 1964-65 and 1979-80 the trophy could not be played.
