Following are the statistical highlights of the second day's play in the first Test between India and South Africa in Chennai on Thursday.
# The 82-run partnership between Wasim Jaffer [Images] and Virender Sehwag [Images] is India's best stand for the first wicket in 18 innings.
# Sehwag's unbeaten 52 is his 14th half century in Test cricket -- his second against South Africa.
# Sehwag has now recorded three innings of 50-plus in succession, the earlier two being 63 and 151 at Adelaide in January 2008 against Australia.
# Harbhajan Singh [Images] (5/164) recorded his 21st career five-wicket haul -- his second against South Africa. In the 2004-05 Kolkata Test against South Africa, he had claimed 7 wickets for 87 runs.
# Harbhajan's 21 instances of five wickets or more in an innings have been exceeded only by Anil Kumble [Images] (35) and Kapil Dev [Images] (23) for India.
# Harbhajan has now captured five wickets in an innings three times at Chepauk -- his previous two instances being 8 for 84 and 7 for 133 against Australia in 2000-01.
# South Africa's innings of 540 off 152.5 overs is their highest total against India in India, bettering their 510 for 9 wickets declared at Kanpur in 2004-05.
# South Africa's total of 540 is their overall second best against India -- their highest being 563 at Bloemfontein in 2001-02.
# Hashim Amla's 159 is his fourth Test hundred and first against India.
# Amla is now the first South African No.3 batsman to register a century against India in India, obliterating Nicky Boje's 85 at Bangalore in 1999-00.
# Amla's innings of 159 is the highest by a South African No 3 batsman against India, eclipsing Hansie Cronje's [Images] 135 at Port Elizabeth in 1992-93.
# Amla and Mark Boucher's [Images] 99-run stand for the sixth wicket is a record for this wicket against India at Chepauk, bettering the 89 between Duleep Mendis and Anura Ranasinghe of Sri Lanka [Images] in 1982-83.
# Boucher (70) recorded the highest individual innings by a South African wicketkeeper against India, surpassing his own innings of 68 not out at Port Elizabeth in 2001-02.
# Boucher's first half-century in India is his fourth against India and his 28th in Test Cricket.
# Boucher's innings is the second best by a wicketkeeper against India at Chepauk, next only to Australian Ian Healy's 90 in 1997-98.
# Morne Morkel (35) registered his highest Test score, surpassing his 31 not out against India at Kingsmead, Durban, in 2006-07.
