As India and New Zealand [Images] gear up for the all-important final of Videocon [Get Quote] Tri-series on Tuesday, rediff.com takes a look at the past performances of these two teams in the finals of ODI tournaments.
The last time India won a ODI tournament was in July 2002 when India beat England [Images] in an epic NatWest Series final chasing a victory target of 326 runs. Since then India have played in nine tournaments, reached in the final seven times, but could not win even one on their own.
India can perhaps take solace from the fact that twice they succeeded in sharing the trophy as finals could not be completed because of rain and bad weather.
Sourav Ganguly [Images] have led India in 11 tournaments' finals in the past and have a none-too-impressive record of one win and 8 losses.
In a stark contrast New Zealand have reached the finals of an ODI tournament under Stephen Fleming [Images] only four times in the past, but they have clinched the trophy three times. Fleming's only defeat in a tournament final was in 2001-02 VB Series final when New Zealand were blanked 2-0 by South Africa.

One more area where Fleming has an edge over Ganguly in the finals of the tournament is performance with the bat.
Ganguly scored 117 in his first ever tournament final as a captain, but since then his scores in the final have been : 3,28,1,9,60,24,11*,6,3 & 4. The only fifty came in NatWest Series final, which incidentally is his only tournament win.
Fleming scored only 5 in his first innings, but has contributed 50,17,65 & 67 since then.
