Langer hits double ton

November 27, 2004 15:13 IST

Justin Langer made 215 of Australia's 575 for eight declared before New Zealand stumbled to 56 for two at the close of the second day's play in the second Test on Saturday.

Opener Langer shared century partnerships with Matthew Hayden (70), captain Ricky Ponting (68) and Darren Lehmann (81). Shane Warne (53 not out) and Adam Gilchrist (50) also made half-centuries for Australia on a flat wicket at Adelaide Oval.

Left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori took 5-152 from 55.2 overs in blazing heat, with Ponting declaring early in the final session of the day after Jason Gillespie was dismissed for 12.

Gillespie then struck in the fourth over of the New Zealand innings when Mathew Sinclair was caught at slip by Warne for a duck with the score on two. Michael Kasprowicz bowled Mark Richardson for nine in the fifth-last over of the day's play at 44 for two.

Skipper Stephen Fleming was unbeaten on 38 including five boundaries with nightwatchman Paul Wiseman surviving 18 minutes for four not out.

Australia lead the two-match series 1-0.

LANGER'S DOUBLE

Playing in his 82nd Test, Langer was not content with reaching his 20th test hundred and went on to score his third double century.

The 34-year-old left-hander was caught on the mid-wicket fence by Jacob Oram off the bowling of Vettori after lunch at 445 for four after putting on 184 with Lehmann.

The determined Langer batted for 499 minutes, hitting 25 fours and three sixes and facing 368 balls.

Australia added 106 without loss in the first session to reach 433 for three at lunch and were 533 for six at tea.

Vettori struck in his 39th and 41st overs, removing Langer then Michael Clarke lbw for seven at 457 for five.

Lehmann was out eight runs later, bowled by Wiseman off his pads after batting for four hours and hitting 10 fours.

Gilchrist's 79-ball innings included six fours, putting on 78 for the seventh wicket with Warne before Gilchrist was caught and bowled by Vettori at 543 for seven.

Australia had resumed in the morning on 327 for three with Langer on 144 and Lehmann on 28.

Langer and Hayden put on 137 for the first wicket, their 13th century stand, before Hayden became the first of Wiseman's three victims (3-140).

Langer shared a 103-run partnership for the second wicket with Ponting, who made a quick-fire 68.

Damien Martyn was out to Wiseman for seven at 261 for three.
