Streak in Zimbabwe Test squad

May 04, 2004 15:10 IST

Former captain Heath Streak and three other "rebels" have been included in Zimbabwe's 17-man squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka, which starts in Harare on Thursday.

The team will be captained by Tatenda Taibu, who at 20 will become the youngest captain in Test history.

However, the four are unlikely to agree to play in the Test unless the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) agrees to demands for independent arbitration.

"I'm available to play pending the Zimbabwe Cricket Union's (ZCU) response to our request for arbitration," Streak told Reuters.

The four rebels in the squad of 17 are former captain and pace bowler Streak, batsman Trevor Gripper, all rounder Sean Ervine and left-arm spinner Ray Price.

The rebels want arbitration over the circumstances surrounding the end of Streak's captaincy, the composition of the selection panel and a series of transgressions the players say have been committed by board members.

The four played for Zimbabwe 'A' in a three-day tour match against the Sri Lankans which ended on Monday.

The squad was selected on Monday. It appeared in the state-controlled Harare Herald newspaper on Tuesday.

Squad: Tatenda Taibu (captain), Heath Streak, Sean Ervine, Ray Price, Trevor Gripper, Tinashe Panyangara, Vusi Sibanda, Elton Chigumbura, Prosper Utseya, Mluleki Nkala, Brendan Taylor, Mark Vermeulen, Blessing Mahwire, Dion Ebrahim, Douglas Hondo, Alester Maregwede, Stuart Matsikenyeri.
