Zaheer out of second Test

March 31, 2004 21:00 IST

The Indian cricket team received yet another jolt when left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan joined the injured list along with skipper Sourav Ganguly and was ruled out of the second Test against Pakistan in Lahore, beginning on April 5.

The Baroda seamer, who bowled just one over on the penultimate day of the first Test in Multan, is suspected to have sustained a hamstring injury in his right leg.

"Zaheer will not play the second match in Lahore because of the injury. We suspect it to be a hamstring injury but we will have a clearer picture after a thorough medical examination," team Manager Ratnakar Shetty said.

The 25-year-old bowler will undergo medical tests in Lahore when the team reaches there for the second match of the three-Test series, he said.

Zaheer is the third player to be sidelined with injury after left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra, who tore the webbing in his hand during the second One-Day International, and Ganguly, who is scheduled to fly back to Kolkata on Thursday for treatment of his lower back injury.

The injury-prone seamer, who picked one for 76 in Pakistan's first innings, was making a comeback to the side after a break of two months following an injury he sustained on the recent tour of Australia.
