Anil Kumble took his 850th wicket in first-class cricket when he dismissed Pakistani middle-order batsman Asim Kamal on the third day of the Lahore Test. The leg-spinner was playing his 183rd match. Kumble thus became only the sixth Indian bowler to achieve this distinction after Bishan Singh Bedi, S Venkataraghavan, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Erapally Prasanna and Dilip Doshi. Kumble started his first-class career for Karnataka against Hyderabad in Secunderabad in November 1989. Khalid Qayyum was his first victim. The break-up of Kumble's 850 wickets is: 392 in Tests, 182 in Ranji Trophy, 150 in English county cricket, 28 in Irani Trophy, 22 in Duleep Trophy, and 76 in other first-class matches. The accompanying table lists the leading wicket-takers in Indian first-class cricket: Bowler | M | Balls | Runs | Wkts | Best | Ave | 5W/I | 10W/M | Bishan Singh Bedi | 370 | 90,354 | 33,843 | 1,560 | 7-5 | 21.96 | 106 | 20 | S Venkataraghavan | 341 | 83,696 | 33,568 | 1,390 | 9-93 | 24.14 | 85 | 21 | Bhagwat Chandrasekhar | 246 | 54,119 | 25,547 | 1,063 | 9-72 | 24.03 | 75 | 19 | Erapally Prasanna | 235 | 54,823 | 22,442 | 957 | 8-50 | 23.45 | 56 | 9 | Dilip Doshi | 238 | 58,712 | 23,874 | 898 | 7-29 | 26.58 | 43 | 6 | Anil Kumble | 183 | 49,875 | 20,782 | 850 | 10-74 | 24.44 | 58 | 15 | Note: All statistics are updated up to April 7, 2004
