Mumbai medium-pacer Aavishkar Salvi was delighted on registering a five-wicket haul, which restricted Baroda to a modest first innings total of 213 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy match at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.
Salvi rocked Baroda early when he picked up the wicket of opener Connor Williams in the ninth over of the day.
"In the morning I pitched the balls in the right area," Salvi said at the end of the day's play. "I was getting my rhythm back and felt good bowling the opening spell."
In the absence of Ajit Agarkar and Sairaj Bahutule, who are away on national duty, Salvi handled the role of strike bowler quite well.
The 22 year-old right-arm bowler said the pressure of being his side's strike bowler did not affect him as he "received good support from the other bowlers".
Salvi finished with figures of 5 for 42 in 19.2 overs. He destroyed the Baroda middle order, scalping wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia, who was batting well on 74, and captain Jacob Martin, who scored just 9.
He then claimed the wickets of a well-settled Himanshu Jadhav (27) and Ajit Bhoite (26) to quell the possibility of a fightback by Baroda.
"It was great to get a five-wicket haul after a month-long injury layoff," Salvi said. "It was a slow wicket and not a normal Wankhede wicket."
But he still rated the performance his second-best. "My best is the 5 for 39 I bagged for India 'A' against Jamaica in the Carib Beer Cup 2002-03 earlier this year," he said.
Salvi said selection for the tour of Australia starting next month was at the back of his mind as he prepared for the match. He also revealed that he added a few new deliveries to his arsenal in the off-season, and used them today.
Judging by today's showing he may well make the trip Down Under.
