Damien Fleming takes coaching job
May 22, 2003 17:02 IST
Former Australia fast bowler Damien Fleming has accepted a senior coaching role with the national academy, the Australian Cricket Board announced on Thursday.
Fleming, a member of the 1999 World Cup-winning side, has retired as a player to begin a two-year appointment as senior coach of the Australian Institute of Sport Cricket Academy in Adelaide.
The 33-year-old, who took 75 wickets at 25.89 in 20 Tests and played state cricket for South Australia in 2002-03, replaces former Australia batsman Wayne Phillips, who will coach South Australia in the interstate competition next season.
"The academy is the finishing school for our talented young elite cricketers, so it will benefit them to have contact with recently retired international players such as Damien," ACB chief executive James Sutherland said in a statement.
Fleming will work under the guidance of academy head coach Bennett King.
Former Australia wicketkeeper Rod Marsh was head coach at the academy before he was lured to England two years ago to coach the academy there. He is also now an England selector.
Marsh helped launch the careers of top Australian players including Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist.
