India 'A', Yorkshire in tame draw
July 11, 2003 22:40 IST
Fighting half centuries by captain Matthew Wood (88) and Michael Lumb (56) saved the day for Yorkshire as the county forced a draw against India 'A' on the final day of the three-day match at Headingley on Friday.
India 'A', who had taken a first innings lead of 90 runs before declaring at 336 for eight yesterday, bowled beautifully on the final day, but failed to overcame the tenacity of Wood and Lumb, who guided Yorkshire to safety with patient knocks.
First-down Victor Craven (46) was the other successful batman for the hosts, who declared their second innings at 296 for six in 94 overs, following which the match was called off.
Yorkshire, who had lost opener Chris Taylor for four yesterday, began the day cautiously with both Wood and Craven playing sensibly to deny the visitors early success.
The pair added 83 runs for the second wicket before Craven was castled by spinner Murali Kartik with the score reading 88.
However, it failed to deter Wood from continuing the good work as he put on 104 runs for the third wicket Lumb, who provided his captain good support, staying at the crease for almost two hours.
Lumb's innings came to an end when he was snapped by Wasim Jaffer of Laxmipathy Balaji at the score of 192.
However, the tailenders frustrated the Indians with almost all of them chipping in with valuable contributions with the bat.
Kartik was the most successful bowler for the visitors claiming three wickets for 76 runs.
