Sri Lanka v Australia: 2nd semi-final

This was the first meeting between the two sides since their last encounter on 31-8-1999 at the same ground during the semi-final of the AIWA Cup. The home team had then won the match by 8 wickets.

The 46 run partnership between Shane Warne and Brett Lee was the best for Australia against Sri Lanka for the 8th wicket. The pair betters the previous best of 36 (unbeaten) between Michael Bevan and Paul Reiffel during the 1996 World Cup final at Lahore on 17-3-1996.

The Warne-Lee partnership was also the best for the 8th wicket in the competition since 1998. The pair obliterates the previous best of 44 (unbeaten) between South Africans Jacques Kallis and Dale Benkenstein also against Sri Lanka at Dhaka on 30-10-1998.

Warne's 36 was his second highest score of his career in 189 matches and 104 innings. His highest still remains as the 55 against South Africa at Port Elizabeth on 4-4-1994.

Warne's 36 was now the highest score made by a batsman at number eight in the competition. Pakistani Wasim Akram had previously made 34 against New Zealand at this batting position on 11-10-2000 at Nairobi.

It was also the highest score made by an Australian number eight against Sri Lanka bettering the previous best of 30 by Tony Dodemaide at Sydney on 19-1-1988.

Aravinda deSilva bowling analysis of 10-2-16-1 (R/o 1.60) was the most economical by a Sri Lankan bowler against Australia. Former pace bowler Champaka Ramanayake had the previous best figures of 8-1-15-0 (R/o 1.88) against Australia at Sharjah on 14-4-1994.

Aravinda's figures were also the most economical among bowlers bowling their full quota of overs in this competition, since 1998, after the fellow teammate Muttiah Muralithran's spell of 10-4-9-0 (R/o: 0.90) against West Indies at Nairobi on 4-10-2000.

This win was Sri Lanka's seventh in a row and its 10th in 11 matches (its only loss coming against Pakistan at Tangier on 14-8-2002).

For Australia this was its first loss in the last eight matches.

Aravinda deSilva won his 29th man of the match award of his career in 286 matches. This was the first such award he received solely for his bowling.
