India v England, 11th ODI

  • Scorecard | Match report | Images
  • Alec Stewart was appearing in his 19th match against India. This was the maximum LOIs played by any Englishman against India. Stewart went past the tally of Mike Gatting, who had appeared in 18 matches against India.

  • Nick Knight recorded his first score of 50 in the last 10 innings, since his 80 against New Zealand at Napier on 20-2-2002. During this period Knight in 10 innings has aggregated just 212 runs (avg. 23.56) with a highest score of 38.

  • Stewart (35), when on 11, became the highest run-getter for England in LOIs. He went past the previous record tally of 4290 runs (in 125 matches) held by Graham Gooch. Stewart now has 4315 runs in 155 matches.

  • The partnership of 104 runs between Ian Blackwell and Alec Stewart was England's only second ever 100-plus partnership for the sixth wicket in LOIs. The only other partnership for this wicket for England was the 112 runs between Neil Fairbrother and Adam Hollioake against South Africa at Dhaka on 25-10-1998.

  • However the Blackwell-Stewart partnership was the best for England against India for the sixth wicket obliterating the previous best of 58 runs between Vic Marks and Paul Downton at Cuttack on 27-12-1984.

  • Blackwell's 82 was the highest score made by a batsman at number six in this competition since 1998. The previous highest score was the unbeaten 73 by India's Robin Singh against the West Indies at Dhaka on 31-01-1998.

  • The partnership of 192 runs between Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly was not only India's best for the first wicket against England, but it was the highest by any team for the any wicket against the Englishmen in LOIs. The previous best was also for the first wicket between another Indian pair of Ravi Shastri and Kris Srikkanth at Cuttack on 27-12-1984.

  • The above partnership was also the best for any wicket in this competition since 1998. The previous best partnership was the 175 runs for the 2nd wicket by Englishmen Nasser Hussain and Alec Stewart against Bangladesh at Nairobi on 5-10-2000.

  • The Sehwag-Ganguly partnership also betters the previous best of 159 runs for the first wicket in this competition which was achieved just two days ago by South Africans Greame Smith and Herschelle Gibbs against Kenya at this very same ground on 20-9-2002.

  • The 77-ball hundred by Virender Sehwag was the fastest by any batsman against England in LOIs. Sehwag bettered the previous fastest of 78 balls by Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya at Leeds on 2-7-2002.

  • This was Sehwag's only second hundred in LOIs in 40 matches. His only other hundred came against New Zealand at the other ground in Colombo (at SSC) on 2-8-2001. It came in just 69 balls!

  • Ganguly, meanwhile registered his 19th LOI hundred in 203 matches. He equals the tally of Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar. Now only teammate Sachin Tendulkar (33 hundreds) has more three figure knocks in LOIs.

  • The hundred was Ganguly's eighth hundred as a captain in 74 matches. This is now the maximum hundreds scored by a captain in LOIs. Ganguly went past the seven hundreds by Jayasuriya in 90 matches as captain.

  • Sehwag and Ganguly provided the 12th instance when two batsmen recorded hundreds for India in the same LOI match. Interestingly, they also provided the first ever instance when two hundreds were scored in the same match against England.

  • This was Ganguly's first three-figure knock against England bettering the 80 he made at the Wankhede Stadium at Mumbai on 3-2-2002.

  • India became the first team to win a match at the Premadasa Stadium while chasing a target of over 250 runs. India, in fact, had held the previous record when it successfully chased Sri Lanka's 243-6 on 19-6-1998, while scoring 246-2.
