Tests at Headingley, Leeds

Address: Headingley Cricket Ground, St. Michael's Lane, Leeds, West Yorkhire. LS6 3BR
Telephone: 0113-278-7394
Capacity: 14000
Home Team: Yorkshire.

Leeds is second in size only to London, and a bit of a cultural melting pot -- the latest status figures indicate that people of 75 different nationalities have found a home here.

For cricket lovers, this is home ground to the likes of Sir Len Hutton, 'Fiery' Fred Trueman and Geoffrey Boycott, not to mention Darren Gough.

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which was formed in 1863, has the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds as its home ground and headquarters.

In 1887, a group of cricket enthusiasts headed by Lord Hawke, who later became the England captain, set up the Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Co. Ltd., in order to buy land in the Leeds area for use as a sport field. The cricket area was officially opened in 1890.

First-class matches have been played at this ground since 1891. The first Test match at Headingley was held in 1899 and since then 62 matches have played here - all by the host team, who have won 27, lost 18 and drawn 17, while India have played five matches here - in 1952 (lost by 7 wickets), in 1959 (lost by an innings & 173 runs), in 1967 (lost by 6 wickets), in 1979 (drawn) and in 1986 (won by 279 runs).
