NatWest Tri-Series
India vs England, Final at Lord's

  • Scorecard | Match report | Images
  • Marcus Trescothick (109) who has three hundreds in 44 matches for England, has the misfortune of losing all the three matches in which he has scored a hundred - against Pakistan (137) at this same venue on 12-6-2001 and against India (121) at Calcutta on 19-1-2002.
  • Naseer Hussain (115) playing in his 72nd match recorded his maiden LOI hundred of his career. His previous highest was the 95 he made against Bangladesh at Nairobi on 5-10-2000.
  • Hussain became the only fourth English captain to score a hundred in LOIs. The others being David Gower (102 - against Australia at Lord's on 3-6-1985),
Graham Gooch (112 not out - against New Zealand at the Oval on 25-5-1990) and
Mike Atherton (127 against the West Indies at Lord's on 28-5-1995 & 113 not out against Australia at the Oval on 24-5-1997).

Interestingly now all the five hundreds by English captains have come in London.

  • The previous highest score by an English captain against India was the 81 by David Gower at Manchester on 26-5-1986.
  • The 185 run partnership for the second wicket between Trescothick and Hussain was England's best for any wicket against India. The previous best was the 176 runs, also for the 2nd wicket, between Dennis Amiss and Keith Fletcher at this same venue on 7-6-1975.
  • The opening wicket partnership of 106 runs between Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag was the second for India at this venue. This pair had put on 109 runs in the earlier match between the two sides on 29-6-2002. For the record, the highest opening stand at this venue by any other team, other than the home side and India, is the 86 by West Indians Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes against England on 30-5-1980.
  • The partnership of 121 runs between Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif was India's best for the sixth wicket against England surpassing the previous best of 104 between Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri at Manchester on 26-5-1986.
  • The above partnership was also the best at this ground for the sixth wicket bettering the previous best of 84 between Sri Lankans Arjuna Ranatunga and Romesh Kaluwitharana against the home side on 14-5-1999.
  • The match winning unbeaten 87 by Kaif was his highest of his career, while playing in his 18th match. His previous highest was the 68 he had made against Zimbabwe at Hyderabad earlier this year on 16-3-2002.
  • The match aggregate of 651 runs was the seventh highest ever recorded in a LOI match. However it was the maximum made in a LOI match in England which obliterates the previous highest of 626 runs made by Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Swansea in a 60-over match on 9-6-1983. The previous best match aggregate in a 50-over match in England was the 589 runs between India and Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-5-1999.
  • India have now won 18 tournament titles since its first in 1983. Incidentally, India had lost its last nine tournament finals in a row since April 1999. Its last tournament win before this one came in November 1998 at Sharjah.
  • This was Ganguly's first tournament win after the five earlier unsuccessful attempts.
  • This was India second tournament win in England and also at Lord's after its World Cup win in June 1983.
