Wisden's Top ODI performancesViv Richards played the greatest one-day innings of all time. His dynamic 189 not out against England at Old Trafford in 1984 has been rated as the best performance in one-day International cricket according to Wisden.com. He is joined at the top of the rankings by Gary Gilmour, awarded the best bowling performance in one-day history for his 6-14 in the inaugural World Cup semi-final between Australia and England at Headingley in 1975.Following the success and appeal of the Wisden 100, which assessed and rated every batting and bowling performance in Test cricket, Mr Yajurvindra Singh Bilkha, Managing Director of Wisden Online India said that "Wisden.com have prepared their Top 100 One-Day International innings of all time based on analysis of 31 years of one-day Internationals." Facing a fearsome bowling attack of Bob Willis, Ian Botham, Neil Foster, Geoff Miller and Derek Pringle, Viv Richards in his momentous innings dragged the West Indies from the depths of 102 for 7 to the luxury of 272 for 9, cementing a winning position in the series. The script couldn’t have been better for Gary Gilmour in his Top 100 performance. The first World Cup, in front of a raucous Yorkshire crowd he dismissed England’s top seven - Amiss, Wood, Fletcher, Greig, Hayes and Knott - and left England for dead at 37 for 7. Not quite content with securing first place in Wisden’s Top 100 One-Day International innings, Vivian Richards also takes second place with the remarkable, and unforgettable, 138 not out against England in 1979. Coming in at third in the list s the modern day blaster, Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka. Speaking to Wisden.com about his 189 against India at Sharjah he said: "By the 20th over we had lost about four wickets so there was a lot of responsibility on myself that day. I batted for almost 49 overs and got 189, it was the best innings I have played in my life." And taking the fourth spot, Kapil Dev said of his 175 not out against Zimbabwe; "When you are 17 for 5 after nine overs then you have to play out the total number of remaining overs. It was just 60 overs... so you must get 100 runs - even 140-150 would have been a respectable total. So my idea, in that case, was to stick around and stay even though that was against my nature of play." England’s presence within the batting list begins at fifth where the graceful exploits of David Gower have been recognised. His performance in Brisbane against New Zealand where he notched up 158 of 116 balls was described in the Wisden Almanack as "a brilliant exhibition of relaxed strokeplay." The second and third places on the all-time greatest one day performance list belong to Pakistan in the form of Aaqib Javed at the tender age of 19 showed his maturity when he took 7 for 37 - at the time the best one-day bowling figures to fell India in the pursuit of 262 for 8. This included a hat trick of lbws in his third over. This wasn't just any old hat trick: Aaqib nailed Ravi Shastri, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar. A young Waqar Younis might have wasted the considerable riches on offer in this Natwest Series match at Headingley. But at the age of 29, Waqar knew what he was doing, and brushed England aside with seam bowling of the highest quality. His 7 wickets for 36 runs places him at third on the list.
