India's tour of West Indies

India (246 & 39-1) beat Guyana Board Presidents XI (118 & 168) by nine wickets.

India warmed up for the opening Test against the West Indies by completing a nine-wicket win over a second-string Guyana Board Presidents XI in the three-day match on Sunday.

Ace leg-spinner Anil Kumble starred in the tourists' victory in the only practice game before the first Test, starting at Bourda on 11 April.

The spinner finished with 5-50 off 21 disciplined overs as the hosts, trailing by 130 runs, were shot out for 168 in their second innings on the third and final day at the Everest ground.

Left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan was the other successful bowler in the morning session, capturing the last two wickets to finish with 2-37.

The West Indies selectors sprang several surprises when they named their 13-man squad for the first Test against India in Guyana starting on 11 April.

Wicketkeeper Junior Murray and Stuart Williams were recalled at the expense of Ridley Jacobs and Darren Ganga, who have both struggled with the bat.

Murray has made four centuries in this year's Busta Series while Williams has three to name - one of which was a double century.

Brian Lara is also back in the squad after recovering from an elbow injury. The left-hander dislocated and fractured his elbow after colliding with a Sri Lankan fielder in December.

Ryan Hinds was selected as a batting all-rounder instead of Jamaica's Garrett Breese while Merv Dillon, Cameron Cuffy, Adam Sanford and Marlon Black were the four fast bowlers named in the squad.

Brian Lara has been recalled to the West Indies squad for the first Test against India after recovering from an elbow injury.

The left-hander dislocated and fractured his elbow after colliding with a Sri Lankan fielder in December, but he has proved his fitness in time to be named in the 13-man squad for the match starting here on Thursday.

Wicketkeeper Junior Murray and opening batsman Stuart Williams were also recalled, Murray replacing Ridley Jacobs and Williams coming in for Daren Ganga.

Ryan Hinds was selected as a batting all-rounder instead of Jamaica's Garrett Breese.

Miscellaneous

United Cricket Board of South Africa chief Gerald Majola has asked his convenor of selectors to refrain from announcing a 25-man World Cup training squad.

It appears that one of the reasons the announcement has been scuttled is that Rusdi Magiet might not hold the position of convenor beyond August.

The other is that a meeting of all stakeholders has been scheduled for April 22, less than two weeks after South Africa's disastrous international season comes to an end.

Magiet had planned to meet with his fellow selectors on Tuesday and name a squad perhaps later that night after the final limited overs clash against Australia at Newlands.
