Australia in England
World Champions Australians got a rude shock when Hampshire dismissed the visitors for a paltry 97 in 30.4 overs at Southampton. Opening bowlers Alan Mullally (5-18 in 11.4 overs) and debutant pace bowler James Schofield (3-25) routed the Aussies. In reply Hampshire raced to 238-3 in 67 overs. Former England batsman and the home team captain Robin Smith is batting on 79, with former Zimbabwean all-rounder Neil Johnson scoring a 64 not out.
Coca-Cola Triangular in Sri Lanka
India has finally managed to win a match in the tri-nation tournament in Colombo. This was the team's first win after three losses in a row. India restricted Sri Lanka after the home team had put on over 100 runs for the first wicket. From 160-3 Sri Lanka was dismissed for just 183. In reply the Indians reached the target in 45.4 overs thanks to an unbeaten 87 by VVS Laxman.

Sourav Ganguly, for the third time in his career was missing a ODI match due to a match referee suspension. He could not play the first match of the Pepsi Cup series against Australia at Kochi on 1-4-1998, as he was suspended by South African match referee Peter Vander Merwe. He had showed dissent when given out lbw by English umpire David Shepherd on the second day during the third Test against Australia at Bangalore on 26-3-1998. He was also suspended from playing the Rajkot one-dayer against Zimbabwe on 14-12-2000, when Australian match referee Barry Jarman handed over this sentence for extensive appealing in the previous match at Kanpur on 11-12-2000. Ganguly incidentally becomes the first captain to be suspended for a match in ODI history on two occasions and also becomes the first player to be suspended on three separate occasions.
________________
It seems Ganguly's suspension was the result of a decree by the new ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed, who has instructed all match referees to be more strict while dealing with indiscipline on the field. He now wants them to issue actual match suspensions instead of suspended sentences, which have been hitherto in force. Speed insists that it the responsibility of the team captain to set the right example and this was the reason why skipper Ganguly was being given a one match suspension for a seemingly minor offense. However, it would interesting to wait and see if the precedence set by Cammie Smith is maintained in a unified manner by Smith and the other match referee in the future.

When he claimed the wicket of Dravid, Chaminda Vaas became the third Sri Lankan after Muralitharan (246 wickets) and Jayasuriya (202) and 15th bowler in ODI history to take 200 wickets. Interestingly, Vaas, who was appearing in his 163rd match, became the only third left-arm bowler to reach this milestone after Pakistani Wasim Akram (440) and Jayasuriya (202).
West Indies in Zimbabwe
West Indies has taken a useful lead of 216 runs by the second day of the final Test at Harare against Zimbabwe. West Indies were dismissed after tea for 347. At close Zimbabwe lost the wicket of Ebrahim, as the home team still need 189 runs to avoid an innings defeat.
Miscellaneous
Former Australian wicket-keeper and presently in charge of Australian Academy in Adelaide, Rodney Marsh will take over as the head of the England's new National Academy. Northamptonshire's Michael Hussey scored an unbeaten 329 (in 614 mins, 444 balls, 1 six and 48 fours) against Essex at County Ground, Northampton on Saturday. His knock enabled his team declare at 633-6. Incidentally it was the highest ever individual score for the county bettering the previous best of 322 by Malachy Love against Glamorgan at this same ground in 1995. Hussey however just failed to better the highest individual score by any batsman against Essex, which still remains the 332 by Kent batsman Bill Ashdown at Brentwood in 1934.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has banned the captain and the three players of the Roofit Industries team for one year from playing in the local Times Shield tournament. Former international Jatin Paranjpe and teammates Anand Yalvigi, Mazhar Ghadialli and Usman Malvi, along with the umpires BA Jamula and K Anja have been handed over this punishment, after the players were involved in a brawl with the umpire Jamula during the A division final last season. The umpires were also punished since they erred in exercising their authority over the said game.

Former editor of Wisden Cricket Monthly (WCM) David Frith, has ridiculed the recently published Wisden 100 for the best all time Test individual batting and bowling performances. Calling it an "ignorant compilation", Frith said the total omission of India's Sachin Tendulkar from the list could not be justified since in the perception of many Tendulkar is only second to Bradman.
