BCCI news! The services of the members of the pitch committee M/s Kasturirangan and Dhiraj Parsana are likely to be used by the BCCI on a retainership basis. Currently the two work in an honorary capacity and are paid only for their travel and other expenses.
Coca-Cola Triangular in Sri Lanka India crashed to their third successive defeat and are without a win in the tournament after losing by 67 runs against New Zealand in Colombo. India gave themselves a chance by dismissing New Zealand for 200 in a game reduced to 48 overs after overnight rain delayed the start of the game by an hour. Captain Sourav Ganguly took three wickets, including Kiwis' stand-in skipper Craig McMillan, to finish with figures of 3-32. Yuvraj Singh and Virender Shewag took two wickets each as New Zealand struggled.
Darryl Tuffey then removed VVS Laxman to leave India on 9-2, but Virender Shewag and Rahul Dravid pulled them back into the game with a 50 run partnership. But then the other batsmen failed as India for the second time in the tournament was dismissed for a low total by the Kiwis. If India need to qualify for the final, they will have to win the remaining three matches and hope New Zealand lose their last two matches against Sri Lanka and India. India will have to beat Sri Lanka twice and New Zealand once to earn six points, which will put them ahead of New Zealand's four points. The decision of the Indian tour committee to use young Punjab all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as the opener in the first two matches of the tri-series has not gone down well with the selectors. It seems the matter could come up for discussion when the selectors meet in Mumbai to choose the Test team to Sri Lanka.
News from Pakistan The newly formed selection committee in Pakistan headed by former wicket-keeper and captain Wasim Bari will meet today at Rawalpindi to preview Pakistan's plans for the forthcoming season. They are likely to come out with a list of probables for the coming season. The degree of fitness of Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar is not yet clear and the PCB chairman Tauqir Zia made it clear that they would be considered only if they proved their fitness. Former wicket keeper Moin Khan's return to the side also seems remote since Rashid Latif had performed well on the tour of England. The other members of the selection committee are Shafiq Ahmed Papa, Mohsin Hassan Khan and Aaqib Javed. Pakistan may go into the next season without a foreign coach after all. After South African Richard Pybus quit his post at the end of the England tour, Pakistan began their hunt for a foreign coach. Talks with South African Kepler Wessels and Surrey's Keith Medlycott have not been fruitful enough and if nothing materialises Pakistan may decide to appoint their own former batsman Khalid Ibadulla as coach for the upcoming season. Ibadulla currently runs a coaching Academy in New Zealand.
New Zealand will tour Pakistan for a three Test and three one-day match series beginning mid September upto October. The details of matches are given below:
Miscellaneous The Zimbabwe Cricket Union said it was working towards trying to eradicate racism from within cricket in the country. The ZCU are looking to induct at least seven non-white players into the side and also have agreed that the A team should be captained by a non-white player. They are also looking to extend this into other areas of cricket like umpiring, scoring, selection committees and managers. There is also a move to make the Zimbabwe Cricket Union a corporate body that can effectively deal with all administrative matters. Under the plans of restructuring the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) a chief cricket operations officer and a chief cricket development officer have been appointed by the WICB. Michael Hall, a former manager of Jamaica's Sports Development, is the WICB's new cricket operations officer, while Michael Seepersaud is the chief cricket development officer. An officer of India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) SP Singh is now in Monaco probing the alleged mismanagement of telecast rights of major cricket events. Singh who met the officials of the ICC anti-corruption unit in London last week, is going into deals that were signed by Doordarshan and WorldTel. The CBI is keen on nailing the administrators in Doordarshan who may have violated norms to obtain telecast rights. Incidentally, Monaco, is the headquarters of the ICC's commercial development department, that was headed by the then ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya, at the time when some of the deals were done. Former President of the BCCI Raj Singh Dungarpur has hit back at the allegations that appeared in a section of the media questioning the large amounts of money paid to Australia's Geoff Marsh. Marsh had been appointed consultant on cricketing matters by the BCCI who have reportedly spent rupees 35 lakhs (about US$ 75, 000) and have got nothing significant from him as yet. There are murmurs in the Board among members about the money being paid to Marsh. Dungarpur however said Marsh was worth every money that was being spent on him as he will be soon coming up with a strategy and will be taking on the responsibility of preparing the Indian-A teams thereby strengthening the senior team's bench strength.
It needed a bullish 42 from Dion Nash to lift them to a defendable total. Ganguly could not perform as impressively with the bat, falling lbw in the second over of the innings to Kyle Mills after scoring just four runs.
