The Ashes Test series

Damien FlemingAfter pounding the Somerset bowlers with a powerful batting performance Australia's Damien Fleming showed his ability with the ball, running through home team for 267. Fleming who took 6-59 ran through the Somerset batting, beginning with a wicket of his first ball Aamer Sohail the Pakistani opener was the top scorer for the hosts with 50. Australian skipper Ricky Ponting declared the innings closed after 2 hours of play were lost in the morning. Somerset were all out just before stumps on the second day 81 runs behind the Australian total.

England's chairman of selectors David Graveney has told his players that a lot more discipline would be required by his players especially by the bowlers if they were to have any chance of levelling the series against the all consuming Aussies. Graveny said he has been flooded with mail from disappointed supporters after England crashed to defeat on the fourth day of the first Test. Mark Ramprakash who missed the first Test due to a hamstring injury is likely to play the second at Lord's beginning on 19 July.

India touring Sri Lanka

Sourav Ganguly and his team will leave for Sri Lanka from Chennai on the 16th July. The tri series featuring the hosts and New Zealand will be played in Sri Lanka from 18 July to 4 August. A few changes will be made for the team that stays back to play three Tests at Galle, Kandy and Colombo between 14 August and 2 September.

West Indies to Zimbabwe

West Indies opener Chris Gayle followed his unbeaten 259 against the Presidents XI with a 164 on the first day of the West Indies tour match against Zimbabwe A at Harare. After putting on 242 for the first wicket with Ganga (79) the West Indies displayed some inconsistent batting to be dismissed for 374. Useful contributions came from Carl Hooper (49) and Marlon Samuels (50). Ray Price (who is the nephew of top golfer Nick Price) claimed 5-121. At stumps on the first day Zimbabwe A were 26-0.

Miscellaneous :

Surrey won the Benson & Hedges final defeating Gloucestershire by 48 runs. This is the third time Surrey are winning the coveted trophy. Gloucestershire began on the wrong foot after a long list of injuries prevented them from fielding their full strength side. Brothers Adam & Ben Hollioake added valuable runs in the middle order when Surrey batted to avert a batting collapse and help post a match winning total.

Dipak PatelFormer Kenyan born New Zealand off spinner Deepak Patel said he had no regrets of pulling out of the race for being New Zealand's cricket coach. Patel who was a very strong contender for the post withdrew from the race when the selection process was changed to exclude the coach from the team selection process. With his withdrawal Denis Aberhart emerged the only contender. Patel said he was happy for coaches in New Zealand as the selection of Aberhart proved that you didn't have to make it to the international scene to be a coach.

Ali Bacher the director of the World Cup has come out in praise of Namibia's performance in the ICC Trophy that enabled them to qualify for the 2003 World Cup to be held in South Africa. Namibia is the third African nation to qualify for the World Cup.

Sachin Tendulkar will have his right foot examined again by the BCCI appointed orthopedic advisor, Dr Anant Joshi in Mumbai again, after 10 days. Dr Joshi had examined Tendulkar earlier this week and advised at least 3 weeks rest. He has intimated the BCCI that he will be ready to leave for Sri Lanka by July 31.
