8000 runs for Mark Waugh
Mohandas Menon
Mark Waugh, during his brilliant innings of 173 (in 148 balls) against the West Indies at Melbourne on February 9, 2001, joined four other batsmen by reaching the landmark of 8000 runs in limited overs internationals history. By the end of his knock Waugh aggregated 8107 runs (avg. 39.55) in 230 matches.
Incidentally, his 173 was the ninth highest individual score in LOIs and by far the highest by an Australian batsman. The previous highest was the 154 by fellow-opener Adam Gilchrist, made against Sri Lanka at this same venue on 7-2-1999. Waugh also bettered the previous highest score in a one-day match in Australia by any batsman, which was 167 by West Australia's Zimbabwean batsman Murray Goodwin against New South Wales at Perth just recently, on January 19, in the domestic Mercantile Mutual Cup.
Interestingly, the previous highest score made against the West Indies in LOIs was the 132 by Sri Lankan left-hander Avishka Gunawardene in the recent ICC Knockout tournament at Nairobi Gymkhana on October 4, 2000.
