But England's hopes of a series-tying victory were dealt a blow when rain began during the tea break, preventing play in the evening session.

Bangladesh in New Zealand

Chris Cairns All-rounder Chris Cairns took 7-53 on Saturday as New Zealand crushed Bangladesh by an innings and 52 runs. Bangladesh had narrowly failed to avoid the follow-on on the fourth day when they were out for 205, 160 runs behind the Black Caps' first innings of 365-9 declared.

Bond enjoyed the best day of his brief Test career by taking four for 47 against Bangladesh at Hamilton, and claiming another wicket after the tourists had been forced to follow on.

England's Test series in India may have been the subject of more than £400m worth of illegal bets. A Daily Telegraph report claims £140m was bet in India on the first two games, with a similar sum expected to be laid by the end of the current game in Bangalore.

Mobile phones are used for bets on cricket as on-course race betting is the only legal way to place wagers in India.

Glenn McGrath Glenn McGrath has ousted Shaun Pollock from the number one spot in the world bowling ratings following Australia's victory over South Africa in the Adelaide Test. He now has 909 points under the PricewaterhouseCoopers system, six more than Pollock, who only managed one wicket in the game.

New Zealand all-rounder Dion Nash has been suspended for three domestic matches following an incident during a match between Auckland and Otago.

Nash was found guilty of 'unacceptable behaviour' by Otago code of conduct commissioner John Henderson after abusing umpire Dave Quested and one of Otago's players.

Sri Lanka will play three-day matches at venues as diverse as Shenley and Chesterfield on their three-Test tour of England next summer. The Denis Compton Oval, at Shenley in Hertfordshire, has seen only two first class matches in its history, both involving the MCC.
