England in India

Ashley Giles England's top spinner Ashley Giles should be fit to play in Tuesday's make-or-break second Test against India after recovering from injury. Ahmedabad is the scene for the second Test in the series with England trailing 1-0.

And the England camp has arrived there with the news that the slow left-armer from Warwickshire has recovered from a bruised heel suffered in the Jaipur warm-up match. "I expect Ashley to be fit. He has done everything today," captain Nasser Hussain told reporters on Sunday after nets.

John Wright will not know whether he has a long-term future as Indian cricket coach until after the home Test series against England. The former New Zealand skipper, and the team's Australian physio Andrew Leipus, both met Indian board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya on Saturday. The meeting followed Dalmiya's complaints of the team's poor away form and the spate of injuries to key players.

Wright became India's first foreign coach in October last year, but has come under increasing pressure to retain his job after a number of poor performances this year.

West Indies and Zimbabwe in Sri Lanka

Zimbabwe responded well to the ignominy of being bowled out for just 38 against Sri Lanka on Saturday by beating the West Indies on the same ground 24 hours later. The in-form Brian Lara was out for two as the Windies were restricted to just 173 in the second match of the one-day triangular tournament.

Zimbabwe lost Dion Ebrahim to the first ball of their innings, before Carlisle (47) and Grant Flower (30) recovered well. The West Indies innings ended in the final over at 173 when Ridley Jacobs (20) pulled Travis Friend to deep midwicket where Streak took a smart catch.

Chaminda Vaas Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas was the chief destroyer as Zimbabwe were dismissed for the lowest score ever score in a one-day international. Left-arm paceman Vaas returned record one-day figures of eight for 19, including a hat-trick, as the tourists fell apart in just 15.4 overs.

Zimbabwe's total was five runs less than Pakistan managed when they were bowled out for 43 by the West Indies at Cape Town in 1993. The match was the first in the triangular series which also includes the West Indies.

South Africa in Australia

South Africa are hardly preparing in ideal fashion as they watched Western Australia's make 600 for eight declared. Team spearhead Allan Donald bowled only four overs on Sunday because of blistered feet caused by new boots, and he finished with an unflattering 1-100 from 25 overs.

It was the biggest score any team has made against South Africa since Australia thrashed 628 for eight wickets in the first Test at The Wanderers in 1997.

Australia have taken account of an Adelaide pitch that takes spin by recalling Stuart MacGill for next week's first Test against South Africa.

MacGill will join fellow leg-spinner Shane Warne in the squad of 12 for the match, which begins on Friday. "I am very surprised because I didn't dream of getting selected for this match," said MacGill. "I was angling for the Sydney Test.

Bangladesh in New Zealand

Two days of rain washed out the first match of Bangladesh's brief New Zealand tour. The match against an NZ District Association XI ended in a draw on Sunday after no play was possible on the third and final day and only four balls were bowled on the second day. The NZ District Association XI declared early on the second morning at their overnight 232 for three and rain prevented Bangladesh from beginning their reply.

Miscellaneous

Waqar Younis Waqar Younis and Mudassar Nazar have been re-appointed as Pakistan's captain and coach. The pair will remain in charge for next month's tour to Bangaldesh and the home series which follows against West Indies.
