John Lever
For many years he struggled to get into the England side. He got an opportunity on the tour of India in 1976-77 and grabbed it with both hands.
His 7/46 remain the best-ever bowling figures by an Englishman on debut. He ended up with 26 wickets at 14.61 in the series.
But he is also remembered for the ‘Vaseline’ incident in the Madras Test, where he was accused of using strips of Vaselined gauze above his eyes to help him get more swing. Later, he was exonerated of the charge.
