Zimbabwe used the third day to consolidate their position in the second Test against Bangladesh at Harare. When rain forced an early end to the third day's play Zimbabwe were 377-6 with a lead of 123. Skipper Heath Streak was unbeaten on 65. Grant Flower (84) put on 133 for the sixth wicket with his skipper.
Pakistan has finally named a 17-member team to tour England that includes former skipper Wasim Akram, whose relationship with present captain Waqar has been under deliberation however may not be guaranteed a place in the final playing eleven. The team is as follows: Waqar Younis (capt), Inzamam-ul-Haq (v capt), Rashid Latif (wk), Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Wasim, Imran Farhat, Yousuf Youhana, Salim Elahi, Faisal Iqbal, Younis Khan, Mohammad Sami, Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq, Azhar Mahmood, Mushtaq Ahmed and Abdur Razzaq. With Sri Lankan Cricket Board's interim committee stopping all payments for the construction of the new Rs. 100 million Sugathdasa Stadium in Dambulla, the construction company, Sierra International, has virtually taken over the ground. They have also refused access to anyone till the Sri Lankan Board clears the pending dues. Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of the Board, Anura Tennekoon, will visit the site, which also staged an ODI match against England in March, to investigate the matter. The defamation case filed by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) secretary MP Pandove against former India skipper Bishan Singh Bedi has been adjourned to August 11. Pandove had filed the case against Bedi after an article that appeared in a newspaper. Pandove claimed that Bedi's article harmed his as well as the PCA's reputation.
The Income Tax department has withdrawn the tax exemption due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India and has also come down heavily on its officials on its arbitrary spending. In a letter to the BCCI, the Income Tax officer said that the cricket administration was in the hands of the people who were working only for their personal benefit. He further added that for the office-bearers, both past and present, the running of the Board is an end in itself and game of cricket is only incidental. The Salwan Boys School, Delhi won the all-India inter-schools cricket tournament when they defeated ARKS, Patiala by an innings and 53 runs in the final played at Bangalore. As many as 20 teams, including Kenya and two English counties are likely to participate in the West Indies' annual limited-overs tournament later this year. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has approved the plan to double the number of teams in the Red Stripe Bowl. The Kenyan national team, which is already scheduled to appear in the 2002 Busta Series, is keen to participate in the this limited-overs tournament.
The Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) meeting will be held at Lahore on May 25 to discuss the Indian government's decision not to allow its team to participate in Sharjah for the next three years. The meeting will also discuss on the Asian Test Championships to be played between September and February and Asia Cup to be played in Pakistan in September next year.
Rain ended Essex's hopes of gaining their second successive first division win. With still 11 overs remaining Northamptonshire ended with 199-7. However with eight points in this match they still are in the top position in the Championships. With no play possible on the last day between Derbyshire and Middlesex and between Worcestershire and Sussex, both matches ended as drawn encounters. Yorkshire beat Kent by four wickets in a first Division match at Canterbury. This was the only game in another rain-ruined day, which had a positive result

A last ball four from keeper-batsman Ridley Jacobs enabled West Indies to go one up in the seven-match one-day series against South Africa at Kingston. Earlier left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell took three wickets to bowl out South Africa for a paltry 200, the West Indies the scrambled to the target for the loss of seven wickets. Brian Lara made a useful 54. He added a crucial 89 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Carl Hooper (43).
Earlier Andy Flower (23, run out) missed out the world record of becoming the first batsman in Test history to score eight consecutive fifties. In the last Test he had equaled the Test record of West Indian Everton Weekes, who between 1947-48 and 1948-49 had also achieved seven fifties in a row.
Despite running high temperature, Sachin Tendulkar made a brilliant 117 to take his team to an exciting ten-run win over Rest of India in a benefit cricket match former Mumbai and Assam left-arm spinner Ravi Thakkar at the Dadoji Kondeo Stadium, Thane on Saturday. Tendulkar XI scored 298 all out in 35 overs with Jatin Paranjape getting a 50. Left-arm pace bowler Zaheer Khan picked up three for 42 for the opponents. Rest of India skipper Rahul Dravid made 56, while VVS Laxman scored 42. Despite a quick 73 from Sunil Joshi the Rest of India, fell short by 11 runs with two overs to spare by getting all out for 288 off 33 overs.
In a report the ICC's anti-corruption unit head Sir Paul Condon has stated that the match-fixing is still widespread in international cricket and the recent one-day series between Pakistan and New Zealand may have also been affected by it.
