The Standard Bank, the sponsor of one-day cricket in South Africa has offered an incentive to the South African team of one million Rands if they win every one-day series before the 2003 World Cup. This incentive begins with the one-day series against the West Indies, which starts tomorrow with the opening match at Kingston.

Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar's bowling action has been cleared by experts at the Western Australian university. The tests conducted recently at Perth on Shoaib, showed that he has a physical deformity that creates an illusion that his delivery is illegal. This has been confirmed by the PCB. Meanwhile Australian umpire Darrell Hair and Englishman Peter Willey will officiate in Pakistan's opening Test at Lord's, which begins on May 17. Interestingly both men reported Shoaib Akhtar for chucking during the Perth Test in November 1999.
Pakistan Cricket Board will engage Australian Daryl Foster as its new bowling coach and consultant during Pakistan's tour of England. Meanwhile the PCB is still in the look out for a chief coach for the Pakistan team. South African Richard Pybus seems to be the main contender for this post.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has asked the International Cricket Council to intervene after the West Indies decided not to go ahead with its scheduled tour of Pakistan in February-March next year. The West Indies Board has instead invited India to tour the Caribbean at the same time next year. With both India and the West Indies canceling its tours to Pakistan, the PCB will stand to lose more than US$ 25 million. The latest conflict between the BCCI and sports minister Ms Uma Bharti, took a turn for the worse when a letter from the BCCI, seeking tax exemption to the finance minister, was withheld by the sports minister. When asked when she would forward the letter to the finance ministry, she replied "when the matter is resolved".
Northamptonshire trial by 87 runs and with six wickets to spare on day three of their Division One match with Essex at Chelmsford. Essex was earlier dismissed for 206.
Yorkshire, thanks of fifties from Michael Vaughan and Australian left-hander Darren Lehmann, took a lead of 66 runs against Kent at Canterbury. The day, that was affected by rain, ended with Yorkshire reaching 204-8 in reply to Kent's 142 all out. No play was possible on the first day because of rain in the matches between Lancashire and Surrey at Manchester and between Worcestershire and Sussex at Worcester. Derbyshire reached 171-7 at close of play against Middlesex at Derby. Middlesex's pace bowler Simon Cook claimed three wickets. Rain had prevented play before lunch on the first day. Thanks Paul Collingwood's 95 Durham reached 284 against Nottinghamshire at Nottingham. In reply the home side reached 38-1 at close on the first day.

the first day of the second Test at Harare. Price, who was making a comeback to the side had figures of 4-47 in 22 overs. Earlier Bangladeshi opener and temporary wicket-keeper Mehrab Hossain top-scored with 71 while Habibul Bashar made 64. They shared in a fourth wicket stand of 114.
Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was honoured by the Punjab state government for his recent achievements in the Test series against Australia. He has been made a Deputy Superintendent in the Punjab Police. He was also awarded Rs five lakhs (approx $10 500) and was given an allotment letter for a 500 square yard plot of land in his home town Jullundur by Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal.
With the retirement of coach David Trist, New Zealand are looking for a replacement for him. The New Zealand Cricket Council has placed advertisements for this position in all leading newspapers. The NZCC hopes to find a suitable person before New Zealand's tour of Pakistan in September.
Glamorgan making use of an uninterrupted full day's play at Cardiff went on score 330-7 against Somerset. Adrian Dale made 64, while Adrian Shaw is unbeaten on 62 at close.
