The Australian selectors have placed faith in most of the team members that lost the Test series in India and have retained them for the one-day series, but not without giving them a warning that they will be dropped if they do not perform. Pace bowler Michael Kasprowicz is the only one who toured India misses out on the England tour. Left-handed batsman Katich is the only new comer in the side, unlucky leg-spinner Stuart MacGill once again misses out on a major tour for Australia. The West Indies cricket Board has appointed a senior lawyer, Elliott Mottley QC who incidentally is a former Attorney General of Bermuda, to investigate the match fixing allegations made by Indian bookie MK Gupta against the former West Indies captain Brian Lara. Lara who had denied the charges said he would support any move to clear his name. Gupta had claimed that he paid Lara US$ 40, 000 to under-perform during the West Indies tour of India in 1994 BCCI secretary JY Lele will rush to Goa to assist in the investigation of the sale of fake tickets during the Goa one-dayer on April 6. The police had questioned Vinod Phadke, the Goa Cricket Association secretary. Meanwhile following a lead the police also visited Sivakasi (famous for fire-cracker manufacturing units) in Tamil Nadu to verify the fact that the ticket had been printed in a press there. The press authorities said the tickets printed there were genuine and produced the order given by the Goa Cricket Association to print the tickets. South Africa played a tour match against the West Indies Vice-Chancellor's XI in the volcano ravaged island of Montserrat. The match was played with the still active peak in the background. Shivnaraine Chanderpaul's 70 was the highlight of the home team's total of 218 which the visitors overhauled with two overs and four wickets to spare. Former South African pace bowler Fannie deVilliers has called for the dropping of all rounder Lance Klusener. He felt Klusener's poor form with the bat and the ball places a heavy burden on the other frontline bowlers After being mauled in the one-day series Bangladesh put up a good show in the tour match preceding the Tests against Zimbabwe A at Bulawayo. At close on the first day Bangladesh had made 289-8 with four of their top batsmen hitting half centuries. Akram Khan (55) and Khaled Mashud (55) were unbeaten at close. Earlier opener Mehrab Hossain made 77, while Habiul Bashar hit 66. Pakistan ensured themselves of a place in the final with their third consecutive win of the tournament when they beat Sri Lanka by 28 runs. Chasing 278, Sri Lanka could only manage 250-8 in 50 overs. New Zealand and Sri Lanka will now fight it out for a place in the final. Both Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul Haq have now aggregated over 2000 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Ground during their respective knocks against Sri Lanka yesterday. Saeed incidentally become the first to do so. He now has 2043 runs (avg. 46.43) in 47 matches, while Inzamam has 2012 runs (avg. 51.59) in 46 matches. Later in his innings Saeed also became the first Pakistani and the sixth batsman in ODI history to reach 8000 runs. He now has 8016 runs (avg. 39.88) in 221 matches
Pakistan may recall former wicket-keeper-captain Moin Khan for next month's tour of England as per the Pakistan Board chief Tauqir Zia. Moin had withdrawn himself from the ongoing Sharjah tournament following advise to rest an injured knee. The CBFS, Sharjah (Cricketers Benefit Fund Series) is yet to find a replacement for Asif Iqbal who headed the organisation for 20 years. The replacement will be found only after the ongoing ARY Gold Cup tournament. Mazhar Khan of the Emirites Cricket Board heads the CBFS until a viable alternative is found. Mohinder Amarnath has been appointed as the CBFS's co-ordinator for its Morocco project that is nearing completion. The Chairman of the Railway Sports Board Ashok Kumar announced a cash incentive on Rs. one lakh for the Railways cricket team for entering the final of the prestigious Ranji Trophy. This is the second time the Railways are entering the final of the national tournament. In 1988 they had lost to Tamil Nadu in the final. Railways take on Baroda in the final at Baroda from April 19-23.
