BCCI to name Nayudu awardees on Aug 19Roy, Adhikari and Sarwate in running for Nayudu award Former India opener Pankaj Roy, middle-order batsman Hemu Adhikari, all-rounder Chandu Sarwate and veteran statistician Anandji Dossa are among those in the running for the coveted C K Nayudu award, to be decided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on August 19, at Bangalore. The awards committee is to meet under the chairmanship of former BCCI president N K P Salve to choose the sixth recipients of the annual award, which carries a purse of Rs 200,000 and a trophy. The 72-year-old Calcutta-born Roy, who played 43 Tests between 1951 and 1961 and scored 2,442 runs at an average of 32.56, is the holder of the first wicket World record stand of 413 which he put on with the late Vinoo Mankad against New Zealand in the 1955-56 Test series at Chennai. He was also a national selector from 1974-75 to 1976-77. The Baroda-born Adhikari, who turned 81 on August 12, represented India in 21 Tests between 1947 and 1959, scoring 872 runs at an average of 31.14 and grabbing 3 wickets at 27.33 apiece. He was a national selector for seven seasons (1960-61 to 1966-67), had conducted national-level coaching camps and was the manager of the Ajit Wadekar-led team which made history in 1971 by winning the Test series in England. The 80-year-old Saugor-born Sarwate played in 9 Tests between 1946 and 1952, compiled 208 runs at an average of 13.00 and grabbed 3 wickets at 124.66 apiece with his leg breaks and googlies. He was a national selector for three seasons (1980-81 to 1982-83).
