ITI, Telstra team up

ITI Limited and Telstra Corporation of Australia signed an agreement in Bangalore recently to implement local network management systems in India, beginning with Bangalore Telephones.

The agreement covers joint design, planning, implementation and product support with continuous upgradation of technology.

S S Motial, chairman and managing director, told reporters at a press meet recently that the alliance would be in the form of a project cell comprising representatives of both ITI and Telstra.

At first, ITI will have the access to the Telstra software and officials will be trained in the latest networking technology. The first network will be ready by June 1998 and the call realisation rate in the Bangalore circle is expected to increase from the existing 18 to 40 per cent, yielding more revenue to the Department of Telecommunications, he added.

Alan Hughes, project manager Telstra, said once the NMS is in place the onus of implementation is on DoT.

Sanjay Modak, President-Asia South, Telstra Corporation, said the cost per network works out to Rs 50-60 million and the alliance will do business of approximately Rs 1.5 billion over 2-3 year.

Motial said that though DoT has only allotted the Bangalore local circle to the alliance at present, once the project is underway, Delhi and Bombay circles will also be managed through the NMS developed by ITI-Telstra.

Currently, all circles are being managed manually and therefore the call realisation rate, especially in South India is very low.

The ITI-Telstra NMS will monitor and control telephone traffic and redirect traffic flow to use optimum capacity in the various switches in the telecom zones. This NMS will also ensure that a mapping of call traffic is done and various high traffic zones are evenly spread out. The aim of this alliance is to place the customer first and ensure a meaningful and cost effective support to the subscriber, Modak added.
