Besides the launch programme, Microsoft had also involved a lot of Indian companies during Office 2000's beta testing phase.

These included Microsoft partners and industry users, Microsoft India Managing Director Sanjay Mirchandani said.

''For Indian corporations, making the move to a digital workplace, Office 2000 provides an ideal migration path using familiar tools and applications,'' Mirchandani claimed at a media presentation in Bombay today.

Sharing the end-user perspective, NIIT Managing Director Rajendra Pawar said the new Microsoft technology augurs well for NIIT's business model.

He elaborated that the NIIT business model essentially involves sharing experience with employees and business partners down the line and documenting these.

Office 2000 is the upgrade to Microsoft's current desktop application suite, Office 97, which includes the Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel applications. It is a completely Web enabled desktop application.

Well before the worldwide launch of Office 2000, Microsoft did case studies with leading Indian groups like the Murugappa Group, Global Trust Bank Limited and the National Stock Exchange.

Carrying 200,000 transactions a day, the National Stock Exchange operates in over 255 cities and uses a network of over 2,100 VSATs.

The exchange reported after the beta testing of Office 2000 that it reduced the total cost of ownership of a PC in the enterprise.

Global Trust Bank Executive Vice-President P C Narayan said that response time being the most important measure of business efficiency, PC users are looking for an easy and adaptable solution.
