Saanya: I defied the authorities and faced the consequences. Mandela requested to see me when I was writing the second edition, by which time the govt. had already decided to release him, and his conditions of incarceration were greatly relieved

As a Gujarathi yourself, what do you think is at the heart of this metamorphosis?

How often do you see Mr Mandela? Do the old ANC gang get together? What about Walter Sisulu? One does not hear of him too often these days.

Do you agree with Gandhi's pacifist policy? Can a nation survive in today's world on the principle of Ahimsa?

Dieter:It did. Incidentally, Gandhi was never a meek Gujarati, even as a child, the revolutionary spark was evident

How was the spark evident??

Alexander: I don't think Gandhi's pacifist philosophy worked, neither in India or South Africa - but it renewed the moral imperative and we can't live without that...

DR MEER: my question again: do you plan on writing another book??if so what and when can we expect it ?

... Whites have reconciled to sharing with blacks. There is a sense of reconciliation in the country, and white fears that their standard of life would fall - hasn't happened. I think we are all OK in SA. The African majority is kind and considerate

Alexander: Mandela has just declared that Mbeki is not his heir. Ramaphosa has gone into the Money business, Big Time. I don't know whether he will return to politics. He would be a strong contender

When did that happen? Do you think South Africa lost out when the Communist leader ( I forget his name, though I know he was born on June 28) died. he seemed a leader cast in the populist mode.

Mr Sharma: I was banned for 11 years, imprisoned without trial for 5 months, escaped an assassination attempt. Our house was firebombed twice. My husband was banned. My Son also imprisoned, debarred from all Universities and forced into exile. My husband went to prison twice as a Satyagrahi

As an African are you not scared that the curse of Rwanda and Zaire will not be visited upon your country? Don't you think the apartheid regime, howesoever repugnant, prevented such a situation, at least for the next ten years?

What do Mr Meer and your son do now? Are they involved in politics? What does Mewa Ramgobin and Ela, the mahatma's daughter, do now? I remember Mewa was involved in the coloured section of the Botha parliament.
