Hello everyone :) :)
Jairaj (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:45 IST)
Hey guys, do you think the budget is Swadeshi?
dharmatma (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:46 IST)
Sri Gurumurthy: The urgent task in front of the Govt of India is to counter the diatribe, vitriolic propaganda lies and disinformation-misinformation by pakistan particularly in US. India needs urgently effective and forceful speakers who can speak international ( Western style) diplomatic language and project positive good image of India. The diplomate should be well dressed and good looking. He or she should be prepared to act in the interest of India and be prepared to give disinformation, lies and untruth, manufacture some imaginary things. This is the only way to neutralize pakistani lies and propaganda. Very clearly Pakistan and its leaders believe that repeating a lie constantly 100 times then it becomes truth and international community will believe. This offence is their main thrust. Please convey this information to the foreign ministry. In the past 1month India did poorly in propaganda war. Pakistan did a tremendous job in its evil campaign against India. Please note Americans need this kind of propaganda. this pakistan mastered. Please do the needful urgently.
Jairaj (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:48 IST)
Mr Gurumurth: What is your opinion about the budget?
Rani Mukherjee (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:48 IST)
Mr Gurumurthy: Do you feel that this budget has so called 'Swadesh' budget?
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:49 IST)
He's not here yet....
dharmatma (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:55 IST)
Mr. S G : under present circumstances(threat of sanctions) the swadeshi content of the should be diluted until the effect of sanctions is defeated.
Mr S Gurumurthy (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:55 IST)
A.Ganesh Nadar in Madras-Mr.Gurumoorthy is expected any moment now.

Rani Mukherjee (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:59 IST)
Mr Gurumurthy: Don't you think the companies like Enron are the need of the country since they are the power suppliers. I am writting this because wherever I have been in India, I have seen tremendous shortage. And am sure in Madras too the electricity is a big problem?
Mr S Gurumurthy (Thu Jun 4 1998 7:59 IST)

sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:5 IST)
Mr. Gurumoorthy: Please also look at dharmatma's Q below!
S Panchratnam (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:5 IST)
Gurumurthy, O Champion of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch. How do you think the sanctions will affect the country? Will it blow your patrons in the BJP away?
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:5 IST)
Will repost Q if necessary.
ULTRA SWADESHI (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:6 IST)
Mr. Gurumurthy: I believe that India has to be built by RESIDENT Indians. So, why should we pander to NRI's?

Ultra Swadeshi: (Your initials are US ... maybe Freudian slip???) But NRIs is where the money is!!!

Hello to all! :)
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:8 IST)
A V! Hi!!
Jairaj (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:9 IST)
Mr Gurumurthy: It is hypocrisy of the BJP government to open up the insurance sector for the private Indian parties and not the foreign companies. Afterall, the foreign companies have lined down in India ever since the Congress government promised that they will open up the insurance sector for them. Can you comment why insurance should not be open to foreign companies?

Education outlay is up by 50% Does it really mean anything Mr. Gurumurthy? What are the real advantages of this budget to the common man ie. middle class people.
ULTRA SWADESHI (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:10 IST)
sain>> NRI's are to be given educational, cultural and other benefits. Now, they earn much much more money in the West, but do not want to send their kids to medical/engg. colleges here, becos' it is expensive. Why should Indian citizens subsidise the education of NRI's children?
dharmatma (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:11 IST)
rediff is not doing a good job in defending India and its people in the propaganda war against Pakistan and America. Pakistan relentlessly putting out lies nothing but lies and dis(mis)information against India. They have become masters inthis game and are successful, because 95% people don't know the history and they dont care to find out the truth. neither are they interested. Besides, people have short memory.
Shivakumar (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:12 IST)
Shri Gurumurthiji, In terms of development of Indian Companies and Indian Entrepreuners wouldnt the early implementation of Buy-back facility of share in the Companies Act be a more relevant thing today?
Atlanta Vijay (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:12 IST)
dharmatma : pleas keep your discussion about the budget.
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:12 IST)
Ultra Swadeshi: The problem ... with sanctions in place ... NRIs are the ONLY place (other than attracting multinationals) to go for sympathetic dollars!! Educational benefits to NRIs are a minor thing compared to what NRI power can do ... just look North at China ... over 33% of the investment there is by NRChinese!!
Shivakumar (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:13 IST)

Atlanta Vijay (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:18 IST)
Mr. Gurumurthy : the statements of other countries which talk about pakistan and india potray us as "kids off the block playing around with new toys".... ??!?!?
ULTRA SWADESHI (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:20 IST)
Mr. S.G.>> The Hindu had a nice article yesterday (Yes, I agree that N. Ram is a Commie and I don't like that). It basically said that there is a lot of technology involved in making packaged foods (potato chips). The BJP used to say "yes to compu chips & no to potato chips". But India has bad technology to make either of those. It has to either develop it in-house (increase funding & ACCOUNTABILITY to research) or borrow the know-how. Any comments?
Shivakumar (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:21 IST)
Shri Gurumurthiji In your opinion what will be India Economic future post Pokhran II?
pc (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:22 IST)
India is the largest producer of vegetables and fruits in the world, but over 40% of the crop is wasted due to inadequate investments in infrstaructure. And the infrastructure will not some up either because people prefer to use developement as a political platform.

Hello Mr. Gurumurthy. What is your opinion about the budget'98?
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:30 IST)
Mr. S. Gurumurthy! Absolutely! Praful Bidwai, Dr. Mitra etc. are prime examples of Indians running down India! However ... what the West views us to be also matters ... after alll India CANNOT go it alone?! Right? Then we must change portrayal of India by CNN, NBC, BBC etc. so that a more realistic view is presented. How about targetting (in the US) CNN's Larry King, CBS's 60 minutes etc. so that we can change the views that the COMMON American has about India? After all, unlike India, here representative democracy actually works ... letters sent by common people to Senators and Representatives are actually read and responded to. Comments?

Second, we need to start INTENSIVE lobbying ... a la China ... in the US Congress. S Panchratnam (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:41 IST)
Sainarasimhan: I am proud to be a Hindu, but guys like you and this Swadeshi freak make me want to puke. Praful Bidwai has been a critic of the nuclear establishment for as long as I remember. It is thanks to people like him and the late Ivan Fera that the nuclear establishment in this country paying some attention to nuclear safety so that India did not become another Chernobyl. He is a leftist, intellectually proficient and someone who believes that India and Pakistan must talk, for in peace lies the future prosperity of the Indian people. Why should he be condemned for that? Only a close mind unable to comprehend the vastness of thought could speak like you have.

sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:46 IST)
S. Pancharatnam: I respect dissent. H***, it is absolutely necessary to retain some freshness of intellect. But the problem I have with Bidwai is that he wrote a letter in the DAWN of Pakistan ... an apologetic note that spoke of pacifism when there was ample grounds to believe that they were also developing the bomb ... 2 weeks later they DID go ahead ... the security threat to India is clear ... peace-mongers are perfectly fine when there is a hope that there are some sane people across the table ... it takes two hands to clap ... Mr ABV alone cannot declare peace ... the last time we did that Mr. Nehru was so disappointed with the results of Hindi-Cheeni bhai-bhai that he bade bye-bye to the world ... don't you think we should learn from history?

What upsets me about the RSS, the SJM, the VHP, the Bajrang Dal is the closed mindset. Hinduism is a great, tolerant religion, but you people want to make it intolerant, narrow, ritualistic. In your worldview, there is no place for differing opinions. Is this not true?
Mini (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:54 IST)
Mr Gurumurthy: Sorry, for logging late. Sincerely, I don't think that these NRIs will invest in Inida. The reason is if they loved India. They would have come back to our country rather than sticking to US where they are being treated as second class citizen. So, do you think it was wise decision for the FM to give sops to these non-patriotic NRIs?

himanshu (Thu Jun 4 1998 8:59 IST)
Gurumurthyji, I have studied in an RSS school for 7 yrs and I think I can understand our swadeshi policy well. When I read the world history and want to take some lesson from it, many countries have had philosophies similar to "swadeshi", and it has resulted in below par products from their own countries and the ultimate sufferer is the end consumer who has to live with less than what he deserves for his money. A good example is American car industry, they lobbied hard to keep japanese competition out and during this entire period of about 60-80 yrs the level of imrovement in their products was very small, but when they opened the markets, all of them had no choice but to work VERY HARD to keep up with foreign competition, and in the process the rate of improvement of their product was extremely significant. What is your opinion about it?
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:0 IST)
(repeat Q) Mr S Gurumurthy: Is India going to renege on their WTO agreement?
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:1 IST)
Mr GM: At this point in time, cinsidering all the political remifications in India, I will not be happy to invest in India as a MNC, this is also seems to be the common opinion here. Being patriotic does not imply financial stupidity.
Spinsters (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:3 IST)
Mini, sorry to differ on the aspect of NRI. Please treat population as an asset. Did you know that Philphines, N.KOrea are mainly sustained by the repatriations of their workers abroad. Indias strength is People, educated and Not so educated. Many masons and labourers sent millions of dollars during the 1970/80 from gulf, we are even better now we need build on strenghts....
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:3 IST)
Mr GM: MNCs look for government stability and a commited workforce. The first is surely lacking in India at the present.
Rajeev (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:5 IST)
Dear Mr Brahm AStra: I can make out that you are one of the biggest opportunistic. You are patriotic and want to put your money in some other country. What is the point then when you state that you are patriotic. If Indonesia is in a bad state. Then, I feel that all the NON REsident Indonesian's should pump in their money in their country so that their economy can be strong. Sitting in US and salvating your American bosses is not patriotism. People lkie you all shouldn't be allowed an entry in India.
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:5 IST)
Mr. S. Gurumurthy: Since you read Foreign Affairs you are obviously aware about the influence the magazine has among policy makers in the US. Do you have any plans to contribute to the magazine?
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:7 IST)
Mr Pancharatnam ... I haven't heard from you?
Rajeev (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:8 IST)
Mr Gurumurthy: I feel that the rise of Islamic fundamentalism is more because of the economic compulsions. The economic situations of the countries are making them to think of their past glories. After all, everything was fine when Kamal-ur-Turk took over Turkey in 1920s and took the country towards a process of modernisation. Once these poor countries make money. Everybody will forget Islamic fundamentalism. Infact, today Islamic fundamentalism has become an escapist view for muslims. Will you agree?
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:8 IST)
Rajeev: As a businessman and a patriot I have to consider all things...anyway even if I do scarifice some of my money to my fellow Indians (which I do), I still have to balance my books and make a living. BTW, the govt is going to give me a POI card, so I will be visiting India too :)
ShiriBombji (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:10 IST)
India Govt never had any plan or will to deal with all those Indians living below poverty line. They are just easy votes to prey on buy these rich Congs and BJPeans so that they can make their kids and kins even richer. Poor Hindus of India or the worst victims of these leaders. But who is going to tell them, they or blind in this sawdeshi junoon and religious fever. All these poor Indians or not just 2nd class citizens in India, they are not even treated as humans. I think Indra Gandhi and her son ruled India for about 20 yeras by making slogans like "gribi hatao", "desh bachao", "20 point program", "Desh ki Ekta ko khatra hai" etc. and Now it is BJP's turn to make slogans like "sawdeshi", "Pakistan se khatra hai", "hum hindu hai" etc and rule over the poor illiterate people of India. When these bastards are going to stop exploting Indian's religious and Desh Bhakti sentiments?
Spinsters (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:11 IST)
Rajeev, some how the concept of profit, and reasonable returns on equity is difficult for Indians to accept, what you say come back as one more bikari, than invest in India and get returns equal to other opportunities, by investing in Indiawe create jobs and also get returns we need to do what best we can in our own way do not question anybody's patriotisim ...
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:12 IST)
ShriBombji ... language ... language ... *tsk tsk tsk*
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:12 IST)
(repeat Q) Mr S Gurumurthy: Is India going to renege on their WTO agreement?
ShiriBombji (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:13 IST)
Now that we have Bomb, do we still need absurd things like school, cloths, food and medicine?
ragoth (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:14 IST)
Shri.GM:I guess it is pretty original and more than that. The main question is that Kashmir belongs to all Indians, Hindus and muslims and others, so if there is to be any decision on kashmir it must be by the entire country, not just a bunch of paki stooges in kashmir. What do you think?
Spinsters (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:14 IST)
Indians govt can not do anything its the people who make thiong happen, everybody in India wants govt to things for them All we need to ask them is to remove the license permit raj, let the creativity come to the open, If India is worthless why did the foreigners come and rule sfor centuries.....
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:15 IST)
ShriBombji: the politicians are more concerned about their seats that those issues anyways...
ragoth (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:17 IST)
Shri.GM:When will the battle for the mind-set be won over the dreaming liberals, who refuse to wake up and take a look around?
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:18 IST)
Mr GM: whats with all this political bitching by the Amma, soembody should curb that woman soon, else the BJP will not get the opportunity to express their mandate....and then one will never know if they really meant all that.
ShiriBombji (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:18 IST)
Brahm Astra ji, Don't be so truthful in your statements, You could be declared a "Gadaar" or unpatriotic and banned to visit India.
ajay (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:18 IST)
murthygaru, first: how will plebiscite end all peace? do you want me to believe that sympathy for indian muslims the reason for opposition to plebiscite? second : are you saying there cannot be fundamentalism in case of eastern religions or if religions have more than one book/prophet? fantastic. also : why the emphasis on some foreign (chicago) study? swadeshi whither thou?
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:20 IST)
himanshu: that is perfectly correct, only after the Japanese entered the American car marjket did the qulaity of American cars also improve, the consumner had more options, flexibility and an overall better product.
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:22 IST)
ShiriBombji: nah, they still need my money :)
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:23 IST)
Really sweet!!! "You want to knowthe economic value of culture . If all earning Inians disown their ependants an ask the state to take care of them it woul require several times the Indian budget to give them basic needs "
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:25 IST)
Mr GM: DOH..."Brothers remain unmarried to get the sister married .In the west these family an social obligations have become Government programmes though social security."...how does social security effect these family issues in the west ??? please explain.
ShiriBombji (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:27 IST)
"In the west these family an social obligations have become Government programmes though social security. So the swadeshi concept oes not rely only on the market and the state" GM ji, for God's sake don't you know that Govt is missing in People's live in India and they left to suffer at their own. If you call good thing. Then good like with your Patriotism. Show you Desh Bhakti love for the people of the conutry and not to piece of land.
sainarasimhan (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:27 IST)
Brahm Astra: Social Security is DRAGH on the economy. If the government didn't have to spend so much money of the Senior Citizens of US, the budget deficit would disappear ... and the US would be far, far richer!! Look at the failed SS experiments in Sweden and Norway, the UK is a prime example of Western Style society and the attendant problems!!
kkn (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:33 IST)
Shri Gurumurthyji, Is there a organised effort to develop Indian ethos & ethics in Management ? Or we are heading towards the so called Wstern STyle"market-driven" economy where corporates forget that they are responsible "CITIZENS" too & fool people by using Marketing Machines. You must be aware of what many Pharma & Chemical & food companies in Western world have done.... Are we doing anything to avoid this ?
Rajeev (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:33 IST)
Mr Gurumurthy: But India has no voice in the International fora. Infact, who will support India when the dvelop nations want to pass any resolution. After all it is they who rule the world.
ragoth (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:34 IST)
The idea of social security, especially to elders and the like assumes that one cannot take care of ones's own people and encourages such attitudes. Besides, it is also a huge drain on the economy and is turning out to be a major scam. One can see that happening here in the west. In short, it sucks!
coolamy (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:37 IST)

Thanks and bye.
Brahm Astra (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:40 IST)
He didnt sound quite convincing..bubbye.
himanshu (Thu Jun 4 1998 9:46 IST)
Let me first state, I am no big fan of western family values but let me also say I am no fan of "current" indian family structures/values either. What we have in India today is a transitional phase from a joint family unit, which had some brothers, cousins, grandparents, parents, all the children, and some widowed sisters and others, which was very appropriate for small scale family businesses/agriculture to a grandparents+parents+bro/sis+children unit. In its original form every member of the family had a contributing role so it was a healthy unit. But In this "current" structure the effective contributing members are one or two but members supported on them are many and the expectations are same which were y'day, this has caused strain and misplaced identity. Resisting change for the sake of it is not prudent. We need to adapt.
